0. Project Management Outline - done earlier with Mr Mansfield's help.

1. Definition of a Project

A project can be defined as “A sequence of activities, which are connected , conducted across a specific period of time and targeted to generate a unique and well defined outcome.”

a. Please google JF Kennedy's quote about landing a Man on the Moon.  Why is this a 'good' project definition?  Explain carefully.

b. Work with a partner to decide on what would have been a good project definition for the language block extension for the school (a short paragraph required!).

2. Real Life ICT examples

a. Please go to the Link to Private Resources Area UN= students  PW= learning

     - click on link to Applied GCE Unit 8 -Managing ICT Projects  (not Project Management).

     - Read the overview

     - Read Projects sections: (This should take at least half an hour to read thro properly)

           - About (8 pages)

           - Stakeholder (2 pages)

           - Phases (1 page)

b. Choose one of the featured projects and work with a partner to decide on what would be a good project definition (a short paragraph required!).

3. Evaluating a real project that worked well

a. Please split into 4 teams of 3 or 4 students each.  Make sure you can email to each other.

Peter/Mike/Tommy.  Tom/Edward/Chris/Simon.  Aimee/Lydia/Tom/Tom.  Ashley/Richard/Joanne/Nicky.

b. Each team to decide on a 'Successful project' (that has been completed) to research - it must be the same for your team but different from what other teams are doing.  First to claim a subject, gets it...

Examples might be the ones you have read about... or an example that interests you from the Computer Weekly / Public Technology / The Register.

c. Team Powerpoint Task:

Activities to show on the powerpoint, using a shared template and *adding to the slides with what you say* (no reading off the slides thank you very much...):

i. Describe the who, what, where, when of the project.

ii.  Explain a suitable definition for the project

iii. Identify the stakeholders

iv. Suggest success criteria, including several qualitative and quantitative criteria with reasons (use Managing ICT Projects/About information;  your work on databases / your common sense).

v. Identify the phases

vi.  Describe how the project went.

v. Describe why you think the project was successful - not just that it met the success criteria but reasons why - think of the 3 resources and how they were used - time/people/money.  (Use Managing ICT Projects/About information;  your work on databases / your common sense).

For wed/thurs lessons next week - be prepared for presenting on the Weds please.

(For during work experience)

4. Evaluating a real project that FAILED (Individual work)

a. Use the same activities for individual research about the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium.  This time, use the use Managing ICT Projects/About information page 7 to suggest what went wrong.
