Will’s views on Edmodo

I Think Edmodo Will Be gr8 for Digital Leaders

 By Will Wrench (LLS)

Create a group: Teachers have the ability to create groups and invite their students to become part of the group. Groups can be created for specific classes, discussions, clubs etc… You can privately invite others to your group by sharing the 6 digit code. A great extra way of creating an additional ‘group’ for the ‘group’ is to create an announcements and special events page, where you can congratulate and celebrate milestones and achievements, such as, birthdays, high marks in a test, sporting events and more.

Check for understanding: With Edmodo’s polling feature, teachers can do a quick check to see where students and DLs are in their understanding. Polls are also great for gathering feedback on topics, assignments, and ideas. Rather asking for a show of hands from the whole group of students or DLs (where we ‘reluctantly’ put up our hand), the polling system lets us do it individually where we aren’t influenced by others around us.

Ask students to attach a file to share their projects and work:

Students can post their projects to the group by attaching a file with their post. Students can share their work and comment back and forth with their teacher, classmates and other DLs. Pupils can give ways to improve the piece of work and can also use ideas from the work (if acknowledged and accepted by the creator). Teachers could pass on worksheets to pupils using this method. This is ideal for DLs when teaching a class new software. DLs can access the help sheet on the specific software so they can use it when they teach. A good example for when we could have used this system is when I created a Prezi help sheet and other DLs required it. If we had Edmodo at the time I could have shared it on that rather than Fronter.

Reflections on progress so far…

  1. We will be using Autology in school after Easter- both teachers and students will have access. Autology appreciated the feedback that they recieved from LLS Digital Leaders.
  2. Our deputy head was impressed with our work on Whole School Curriculum Day, and thought everyone had done really well.
  3. One tutor has put together a presentation on Prezi to show to the school in some assemblies this week.
  4. We have a visitor, Mrs Laycock, from Richmond Methodist Primary School visiting us tomorrow.
  5. Mr Sharples has been invited to the SLT (Senior Leadership Team) to give a talk about the future of ICT at Lady Lumley’s School – this will, of course, involve Digital Leaders and he will inviting voluntters to come and present too!
  6. Mr Sharples is meeting with Mr Jackson (Digital Leaders teacher at Fulford)over Easter to discuss LLS Digital Leaders presenting at the Fulford Digital Leaders TeachMeet.
  7. Next term is about DLs working with teachers… have a great Easter…
  8. Work for the holidays – pls could you update your diary AND send a blogpost to Rosie
“Reflections on Digital Leaders this term - by yourname”
    - Brief description of activitie(s) and explain why.  Did you lead or take part?
    - What have you learnt from yourself and/or others/the team by taking part?

Review of Digital Leaders so far.

This term in Digital Leaders we have been focusing on a piece of software called ‘Paint.NET’ which is a similar programme to Publisher but it has advanced photo editing tools. The software has been especially helpful to Y9s as we are creating posters for our Dalby Forest project; Paint.NET has great resources to make the perfect poster. As well as learning about Paint.NET from one of the Digital Leaders, we taught it to our ICT groups so they could use it for their posters, overall I think everyone’s lessons went well as all the students were starting to grasp the basics of the software.

So far in Digital Leaders, I am most proud of our work on ‘autology’, which is a new search engine; it only shows you educational results so when you’re doing homework, it doesn’t show you results which aren’t helpful unlike Google. I’m proud of the work we’ve done because we were able to give feedback on the site to the autology company; our feedback will benefit the future users of the search engine and that makes me proud.

I think one of the best things about Digital Leaders is that we find new software and teach it to students and sometimes teachers, I think this is good because we are showing people all the different sides to ICT, for example we showed people ‘Prezi’ which is a part of ICT that is good for presentations then we showed people ‘Paint.NET’ which is a part of ICT that is good for creating posters and editing photos. As DLs we can show all the sides of ICT and that is my favourite part of being a Digital Leader.

Next term, I would like DLs to continue finding new software and showing it to others as teaching software to students broadens their knowledge on ICT.

Digital Leaders So Far…

  • Digital Leaders has started well, although since around the start of the year we have only taught 2 lessons, one on Prezi the other paint.net. But they have been useful to year 9 students.
  • Helping with Autology, Tablets and making this blog with Rosie have been good leading experiences.
  • Digital Leaders in the future could help the school move forward with technology, one example of this is the possibility of using tablets in lessons.
